At Chace Community School we follow the guidance of the national curriculum and work with a scheme of learning developed by Kangaroo Maths. We teach mathematics with a creative, innovative and problem solving focus.
The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:
- become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
- reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
- can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions
Our scheme of learning begins with the end in mind, identifying the essential skills that students require to be successful at GCSE Mathematics. By mapping these skills from Year 7 through to Year 11 we can be confident that students are adequately challenged and prepared for mathematics in the classroom and beyond. Each year we build on the skills taught the previous year and cover the six strands of mathematics identified in the GCSE specification:
- Number
- Algebra
- Ratio, proportion and rates of change
- Geometry and measures
- Probability
- Statistics
